Lily Update #1

Hi Everyone,

So, it's been one month since Leti and I planted our lily bulbs...and lo and behold they grew!  Yay for us and our green thumbs!

Every time I go into Leti's backyard I take a peak at their progress and when I looked on Monday I saw that a lily had sprouted from one of the pots.

From the eighteen bulbs that we planted fifteen are growing nicely.  I noticed that the flowers in the bigger pots have grown the most.  Hopefully the ones in the smaller pots will catch up.  We've placed them in an area that gets good sun and we water them every couple of days.  Can't wait to see what they'll look like in one more month.

Missoni Inspired Design

This past week I made a design inspired by the iconic fashion house Missoni.  Missoni is known for their bold and colorful zig-zag print. www.missoni.com/

This design was a real DIY project, but in my case it was more like a group effort with my dad and brother-in-law helping me make the frame from which the flowers hung.

I spray painted the entire frame black, placed mums and daises in water tubes and attached them to the chicken wire.
Back of the frame...so many water tubes!!!

My color palette of flowers was a trio of vibrant oranges, reds and yellows.  The end product was a bold color explosion of floral art.

Remember, inspiration can come from anywhere!

Sneak Peak

Recently my sister (Johanna) and I had the pleasure of meeting Leslie from Green Vintage Photography. It just so happened that she was doing a photoshoot and they were in need of a florist.  So of course we offered our services. And she said YES!

The photoshoot happened this past Saturday near Folsom, CA.  Here are a few pics that I took.

Bright Ideas

Happy May!

So I often get the question of "how can I stretch my dollar when designing?"  It's a matter of knowing how to use what you have and making less look like more.   That's exactly what I did the other day.  I didn't have that many flowers on hand, but I still managed to make an impactful arrangement.  I used the "scraps" that were leftover from a previous arrangement:  3 anemones, 3 calendulas, 1 small palm, a piece of a ti leaf, a handful of jade, hydrangea leaves, and a leuchadendron variety (recently spotted at Trader Joe's).

The bold anemones and vivid calendulas are a perfect pairing

I made a terrarium-like base using sand, and the small cut materials

Remember to think simple and understated.  You don't have to break the bank to make an eye- catching arrangement.
